Storage of hemp flowers

October 2021

In this blog post, you'll learn the most important things to consider when storing hemp flowers. The shelf life of natural products depends primarily on external factors, including light conditions, humidity, air quality, and temperature. Therefore, if you want your flowers to stay fresh and edible for a long time, you should keep these factors in mind. Below, we'll go into each of these factors in more detail.

Lighting conditions

UV light permanently damages the cannabinoids in your buds! This causes them to lose their desired effect, as the active ingredients gradually degrade. Therefore, make sure your buds are stored in a place protected from light. Brown or violet glass containers are best for this, and then stored in the aforementioned dark place (cupboard, drawer, etc.).

Air

Air also damages your flowers over time. They dry out easily and lose their aroma. For this reason, you should store your flowers in an airtight container. If the container is airtight, it is also odor-proof, thus protecting it from prying noses. Ordinary mason jars with a sealing ring are perfectly adequate and inexpensive. You should also adjust the size of the storage container to the amount of flowers you are storing.

humidity

Humidity is almost the most important factor when it comes to properly storing your buds. If it's too humid, mold can form over time, destroying your entire supply and rendering the buds inedible and even harmful. If it's too dry, the buds will dry out over time and lose their aroma and active ingredients. The optimal humidity for storing hemp buds is 62%. At Hempstore, we use Boveda products to regulate humidity. These regulate humidity in both directions. If it's too humid, they absorb moisture, and if it's too dry, they release it.

temperature

The final factor is temperature. The optimal storage temperature for hemp flowers is between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. Anything above this promotes the growth of bacteria and mold. Storage in the refrigerator or freezer is absolutely unsuitable. Too low temperatures damage the resin glands, causing them to become brittle, thus affecting the active ingredient content and the quality of the flowers.
